An attractive pair in the southern sky
The barred spiral NGC 5101 (left) and the galaxy NGC 5078 are located in the constellation Hydra in the southern sky. They are similar in size to our Milky Way and are located about 90 million light years away. They are optically about 0.5 degrees apart. This corresponds to the diameter of the full moon.
NGC 5078 also interacts with a smaller companion galaxy (IC 879).
But in addition to the larger galaxies, there are countless other galaxies in the background.
