NGC 2547 ... blue, bright, young and hot!
A few bright stars form the constellation Vela, which, as seen from Earth, lies in a direct line in front of the band of our Milky Way. This explains why there are many, many stars and nebulae in this image. This scene shows clouds of gas forming young stars. Young means that the stars of NGC 2547 are around 20 to 30 million years old (for comparison, our sun is 4600 million years old). Young stars are hot, bright, and blue in color.
The animation shows the dynamics of this region.
Visible among the bright stars far in the background are many distant galaxies.
